Iraq War vets face deadline for bonus
As the region and state paid tribute to military veterans on Nov. 1, supporters of local veterans issued a reminder that time is running out for Iraq War veterans to apply for the Ohio Veterans Bonus.
Iraq War veterans have until Dec. 31 to apply for a tax free bonus of up to $1,000 a year.
"Time is running out" said Howard Daugherty, executive director of Clermont County Veterans Services Commission. "If you served in Iraq, the bonus goes away at the end of this year. I'd hate to have somebody tell me, 'I wish I'd known about that.'"
To be eligible, veterans and Ohioans serving on active duty must have been "boots on the ground" in Iraq from March 29, 2004 through Dec. 31, 2011. They must also have been Ohio residents when they entered military service, and they must live in Ohio.
For information or to request an application, call toll free 1-877-OHIO VET or 1-877-644-6838 option 2 for the Ohio Department of Veterans Services. You can also visit www.veteransbonus.ohio.gov or any county veterans service office.
Although the bonus for Iraq War veterans expires Dec. 31, the Ohio Veterans Bonus will continue to be awarded to those who served in Afghanistan since Oct. 7, 2001. Eligibility for that bonus will end when the President declares an end to the war in Afghanistan.
